The image of a manuscript or of an old binding is not just a reproduction. The photographer must know very well the subject matter, to highlight the elements that researchers will need to analyze to study and describe the document.
Backlight is the situation of shooting I like best. The sunlight floods the entire frame and compels the photographer to face contrast, light, sharpening, and balancing of lights and shadows. Only lenses with irreproachable quality can grant good (and sometimes spectacular) results.

Can Zone System be applied to digital imaging? Sure, but it requires a long practice in black and white photography. Knowing how Zone System works is not enough: you need to know how the sensor works, how to extract the information you need from the digital negative, and how to create the very image that you had visualized before taking the picture.
